I will take a train from Minsk to Vilnius in August. I need a visa to get into Minsk (US citizen), and I need proof of travel to get the visa (transit visa, in Minsk %26lt;48 hrs). So, I need to buy the train ticket now in order to get the visa. What is the best way to buy a train ticket from Minsk to Vilnius while I am still in the USA? Thanks.

Well, the best way for that is through a Lithuanian travel agency, because like in Belarus they only sale tickets on the spot - at the Stations.
However, you can look into applying for a tourist visa in the US or in Vilnius - it is a one-day business. This visa will make you a bit more flexible in terms of entering the country, staying there if needed and other unexpected circumstances. By the way, a transit visa prohibits staying overnight (although not all hotels know that), while a tourist one doesn%26#39;t.
If you are interested in buying a ticket, I could e-mail you the details of the Lithuanian chap (a registered travel agent) - he solved the same problem on Christmas for 2 US guys and I believe he even has references from them.

No trains from Minsk to Riga, only buses. www.rw.by offers train schedules in all directions, but there is no English version.
