how safe is Belarus?

Hi all,

I was wondering if anybody out there who lives in Belarus or visited the country can give me their feedback on how safe the cities, in particular, Minsk and Brest, are?

Im comtemplating on making a trip to Brest to meet my fiancee who is also visiting Brest but she lives %26amp; works in Canada, even though Belarus is her home country.

I, myself, was born and bred in the UK, however my origins are Arab, so its not like i%26#39;ll blend in with the crowd in Belarus :) should I anticipate any trouble in Belarus or is the city Brest as calm and safe as they all say it is, particularly to other nationalities?

Any good advice or valuble input will be appreciated.

Romeo

Hi Romeo!

I%26#39;m Helen, Latvian, but live in Belarus for 2 years. I live in Minsk and have been once in Brest. It%26#39;s better to meet in Brest I suppose. Minsk is not safe last time since president election. There are often political flash mobs in the centre of Minsk and accordingly very many armed policemen in the streets. looks awfully...you know.

Brest is little town near polish border, quite calm place. It%26#39; climat is warmer than in Minsk and this town reminds me Jurmala in Latvia:) I dont know anything about quality of the service in Brest, but even in Minsk service in hotels, most restaurants and other public places is of low level. Hope that Brest ihabitans are more cheerfull than in Minsk because they live much more close to Poland and are distant from socialistic way of thinking.

that is all.

Hi

I have been to Minsk and Brest as well as Vietbsk. Let’s just say that it’s nice everywhere if you have money to spend. The service isn’t the best if your going to %26quot;normal%26quot; places, however if your going to nice high class hotels, and restaurants it’s nice everywhere. For safety I would recommend not walking around at night alone, bring someone with you.

Hope you have a good trip.

Safe. Rather. Just don%26#39;t wander streets/grab a cab halfway or more drunk if you are on your one. A friend of mine can tell you why.

Also, unless you are politcally involved, as I am, do not enter any crowds. Do not enter into unfamiliare doings, being ether concersations or rash actions. Do not draw atteniton to your self. Mainly, act like you would if you were Frodo with the ring.

I reckon you were asking about problems related to the civil society, muggers and so on. In this regard, Belarus is perfectly safe. After all, you do have a policeman watching you anyhow.

The information posted here seems very strange and unclear. Belarus generally is very safe. It is a police state. There are police, very visable, everywhere. If I had to compare other European capital cities ( London, Paris, Berlin or Moscow ) to Minsk, I would guess that you are MUCH, MUCH safer in Minsk. HOWEVER, anywhere anything can happen, so you always have to use common sense.

Minsk is 3 times safer than London. I lived there my whole life, and I been around Europe to compare.

lol I cannot believe people are saying it%26#39;s unsafe in Minsk because of the political %26quot;crowds%26quot; :)

Brest is less safe though. There are much more unemployed drunks on the streets at night and less police.

I used to work in Minsk, and married a lady from there. We go back every summer with the children and can not think of one time when I felt %26quot;unsafe%26quot;. I live in Washington DC now, and can tell you without a doubt, that I%26#39;m more comfortable walking the streets of Minsk at night, or any village, than I am in the US.

You may find the occasional %26quot;curious%26quot; person, but other than that I%26#39;ve never had a problem.
