As there were misunderstandings in the past, please, do not confuse Khatyn and its victims with Katyn near Smolensk in Russia where the Russian NKVD shot one by one ca. 4000 (out of total 22 thousand killed) Polish officers - prisoners of war in 1940 in an act of bestial genocide. The newest movie %26quot;Katyn%26quot; (this year%26#39;s Oscar foreign movie candidate) by A. Wajda tells the story. The similarity of names was used in Soviet times to introduce confusion - Khatyn is a German crime and KATYN is a Russian genocide (and many other places like Kuropaty, Bykovnia in Ukraine etc.)

That%26#39;s a good point - thanks for the clarification.

I was referring to the Nazi atrocity carried out in Belarus.

Why to use a misterous term Nazi? Young people ask where is this Naziland located? It is better to say German or German nazi. Hitler was elected in a democratic election. Let%26#39;s call things by their proper names.

Have a good and safe travel.

Cheers.

I%26#39;ll reply to you in a private message, since we%26#39;re in danger of going off-topic here.

The term Nazi is used to define all people - if they can be called so - who conducted crimes against humanity in the times of WWII. The German nation did not dominate in the troops that attacked Europe and Russia, that is why Nazi would be most appropriate.

Moreover, many crimes in Belarus as well as other countries were conducted by the collaborators, very often local residents. The German HQ only manipulated with these Sonderkommands to fulfill their dreadful plans.

Although there is an opinion that Khatyn was meant to draw attention from NKVD atrocities with Polish soldiers I cannot agree with it - you will see the point when you visit the sight and hear its story.

Regards, Burdenkoff
