my recent trip to minsk

Hi,

ive just came back from 5 nights in minsk so heres some info.

you DO need a a visa. you can get it either from a belarus embassy in your home country or at minsk 2 airport.

you MUST have an invitation letter and a voucher from a travel agent in Belarus. You get this when you book your apartment or hotel with them.

so the 2 options are these,

1. book your apartment/hotel with a registered travel agency in belarus and get an invitation letter and voucher from them. in the UK you can send copies of these and a completed application visa form to the embassy and get your visa this way. this is the cheapest way also.

2. you can get the travel agency you book with to send your invitation letter and voucher to the consulateat minsk 2 airport and when you arrive with your filled in visa form they process the visa there and then for you.

As for the health insurance being a UK citizen you dont need to purchase this at the airport like some other nationals.

the visa situation seems more complicated than it is.

Money, you get 4150 Rubles to the £. Minsk is not an expensive place at all.

Place to stay. you can either take a hotel or apartment. if you want any advice about this then email or pm me and i can tell you where i stayed and places in good locations. hotels cost slightly more than apartments at around $65 and $50 respectively.

Locals are friendly, i got no one hassling me at all and the ones i asked for directions or info were always polite, smiley and nice.

Bars/clubs, well minsk is NOT the place to go to party. i went to westworld nightclub that is at hotel belarus and its rather poorin my opinion. between £3 and £6 to enter deonding on the night of the week and for a beer it is 7500rubles or around £1.50

Food is minsk is not great in my opinion but relatively cheap.

minsk has beautiful buildings and streets are spotless. i wandered around in the early hours of the morning and never once felt unsafe or nervous. women in minsk are stunning and im sure if you speak any russian you could have a nice time with the locals having a drink and some food.

minsk is not a big city and you can easily see everything in a couple of days.

We%26#39;re planning to drive to Minsk in late April from West Germany. Can you recommend places (hotels or apartments) to stay? Any restaurants you liked? Thanks.

Hi.

Regarding the point made about insurance in an earlier post here, I%26#39;ve been advised that overseas visitors (well, British anyway) MUST take out government insurance on arrival, which is different from general travel/health insurance that you might already have. And you must obtain this insurance before you get your visa registered in whichever city you%26#39;re staying in.

Does anybody know any more about this?

Cheers.

Yes. You need to be insured, unless you have a Transit Belarussian visa or are a diplomat or a citizen of CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) whih is Russia/Ukraine, etc..

It`s available at the Minsk airport upon arrival, just like you`ve been told.

FEE: $1 for every 2 days of your stay.

|||

Thanks for that, though I%26#39;ll be arriving by train from Vilnius; do you know if it%26#39;s available at Minsk railway station or at the border crossing point?

Many thanks.

|||

I`m sure it is available there as well. I`ll be in Minsk in a couple of days, if I do not forget, I`ll check it and let you know.

Hello to everyone!

The insurance on the border is said to be quite expensive, so you should have it made by your travel agent and sent it to you with other visa staff well in advance.

Regarding cheap places to stay there is a number of options depending on the day of the week you come (working day or day-off - Sat, Sun). A new portal minsk-travel.com has all Minsk hotels spotted on the map, and lists of decent shopping places and cafes and so on. Respecting the anti-spam policy of the forum I would ask you to use the portal for information purposes only.

One can also use www.belarustourism.by but only as a source of general info - because phones and addresses are often out-of-date there.

What a different impression of Minsk!

I AM from Minsk originally and do visit Minsk approximately once every 6 years or so. I find it VERY expensive (comparing to USA). So, to read that Minsk isn%26#39;t expensive was quite a shock. I still find Belarussian food to be quite tasty and fun/parties readily available. Moreover, Minsk is a HUGE city and there is no way you can easily see everything in a couple of days. I think whoever said it referred to down town Minsk only.

Minsk is cheap? This is the news for me. I travel to Minsk every 6 years and find it to be quite expensive (comparing to the USA anyway). Minsk is a small? Get real! It is a HUGE city. There is no way you can %26quot;see everything in a couple of days%26quot;; perhaps you are referring to down town Minsk. Minsk is not a party place? Apparently you missed on all the fun while there. There are plenty of fun/parties places. Food wasn%26#39;t great? Where did you eat?!

It is amazing to me that some one after visiting the place with such incredible history (of over 900 years) could come up with %26quot;not much to do there%26quot; remark.
